MPA NSW Condemns City of Sydney’s Reckless Ban on Natural Gas Appliances: “Ideology Over Common Sense”
The Master Plumbers Association of NSW (MPA NSW) is deeply disappointed by the City of Sydney Council’s decision to ban natural gas appliances in all new homes from 2026, with further bans proposed for offices, hotels, and serviced apartments. Despite being invited to contribute expert advice during the consultation process, MPA NSW and other key industry stakeholders have been mostly ignored.
“This is ideology over common sense,” said MPA NSW CEO Nathaniel Smith. “The City of Sydney is pushing forward with a policy that disregards expert input, public safety, and energy security in one sweeping motion.”
Natural gas remains a critical, regulated energy source for heating, cooking, and emergency backup during blackouts. The removal of certain appliances from all future developments will reduce energy resilience across Sydney, increase reliance on a single power source for heating and cooking, and may drive a dangerous rise in unlicensed gas installations.
“Banning natural gas appliances won’t stop people from wanting them,” Smith continued. “It will push more households into illegal, DIY LPG setups that pose extreme fire, health, and safety risks.”
Culturally and practically, gas remains the preferred choice for many when cooking, particularly amongst our multicultural communities. The ban also risks excluding many residents from choosing how they power their homes and businesses.
MPA NSW urges the NSW State Government to intervene and ensure that future energy policies regarding appliances are guided by safety, practicality, and inclusivity, not activist ideology. A balanced and well-regulated approach is essential for a sustainable and secure energy future.
