Master Plumbers History & Our Members
One night in 1895, an historic meeting took place in the Sydney Institute of Sanitary and Engineering Technology. This meeting laid down the initial foundation for the establishment of an Institute of Plumbing and Sanitary Engineers. This body was later to evolve into Australia’s first Plumbing trade association, the Master Plumbers Association of NSW, a ‘union of employers’ to be later renamed the Master Plumbers & Mechanical Contractors Association of NSW.
Since that first meeting, the Master Plumbers Association of NSW has become one of the strongest specialist contracting organisations in the building and construction industry.
The History Of The Master Plumbers Association In NSW
The first plumbers in Australia came from Britain and Ireland bringing their knowledge and skills with them. They would have been familiar with the Guild system in England going back to the Middle Ages, when associations were formed for mutual aid and protection or for a common purpose, most frequently by persons associated in trade or industry.

Women In The Industry
It’s no secret that males predominate in the trades in general, and plumbing is no different. Since more than a century ago, when modern plumbing became commonplace in buildings, males have dominated the sector. When the first woman in the nation earned a master plumber license in the 1950s, the glass ceiling in plumbing was finally cracked. The majority of plumbing was done with metal pipes and hot lead solder back then, which made the work more difficult than it is today.
Despite this early achievement, just 3% of the entire plumbing workforce, according to estimates, is female.Â
MPA NSW is dedicated to highlighting and celebrating our women in Industry!
