Vale Her Excellency Professor Marie Bashir AC CVO
It is with great sadness that Master Plumbers NSW extends its heartfelt condolences on the passing of former Governor of New South Wales, Her Excellency Professor Marie Bashir AC CVO.
Professor Bashir served as the 37th Governor of New South Wales from 2001 to 2014, becoming the state’s first female Governor and one of its longest-serving. A distinguished paediatrician, academic and mental health advocate, she dedicated her life to public service, social justice and improving the wellbeing of children and families across Australia. Her career spanned medicine, education, public policy and community leadership, with a consistent focus on inclusion, opportunity and compassion.
Beyond her many formal achievements, Professor Bashir was deeply respected for the way she championed vocational education and the dignity of skilled trades. She understood that strong communities are built not only through professional and academic pathways, but also through practical skills, apprenticeships and the essential services that keep society functioning safely and effectively.
Master Plumbers NSW was honoured by her genuine interest in the plumbing and mechanical services industry and her recognition of the vital role tradespeople play in protecting public health. In a moment that remains especially meaningful to our Association, Professor Bashir was awarded a plumbing licence by NSW Fair Trading — a symbolic and heartfelt gesture that reflected her respect for the profession and her support for those who work within it.
She later accepted the role of Patron of Master Plumbers Apprentices Limited, further demonstrating her commitment to young people entering the trades and to the future of vocational training in New South Wales. That milestone occasion was captured in a memorable photograph with Steve Griffin, then General Manager of Home Building Service at the Office of Fair Trading, and a younger version of our current President, Greg McElroy — a moment that continues to hold special significance for our members.
Throughout her public life, Professor Bashir exemplified integrity, empathy and quiet leadership. She used her platform not for self-promotion, but to advocate for those whose voices were often unheard, including people living with mental illness, children facing disadvantage and young Australians seeking meaningful career pathways.
Her legacy is one of service, compassion and enduring impact. She will be remembered not only as a trailblazer in public office, but as a sincere supporter of education, trades and the communities they serve.
Master Plumbers NSW extends its deepest sympathies to Professor Bashir’s family, friends and all those whose lives she touched.
May she rest in peace.
